  • Enamel is a hard tooth tissue that can mineralization and susceptible to acid. The composition of the acidic drink accelerates damage of the tooth surface. Energy drinks are one of the many drinks consumed by people to increase energy containing sugar, citric acid and have a low pH that can cause demineralization of tooth enamel and if it happens continuously will form porosity in the enamel surface that can cause the dissolution of calcium and potentially minerals occurrence of tooth erosion. This study aims to determine the difference of tooth enamel surface hardness after immersed in energy drinks. Thirty-two maxillary premolar teeth were divided into four groups, followed by pH measurements of energy drinks. Hardness of tooth enamel (pretest) was measured using Vickers Hardness Tester and Zoom Stereo Microscope. The first group (control) was immersed in Aqua® pH 7.36, the second group in redbull® energy drink pH 3,32, the third group in monster® energy drink pH 3,30 and the fourth group in rockstar® energy drink pH 2,71 for 24 hours. Enamel hardness was measured (posttest). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc LSD. There was no significant differences among the groups at pretest, there were statistically significant difference at posttest groups. Post hoc LSD showed that there were significant differences at posttest between all groups. The conclusion of this study is that energy drinks have a low pH can cause a decrease on tooth enamel surface hardness.
