  • The purpose of this study is to describe mathematical thinking type abstraction of junior high school students in solving problem solving questions. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with data collection techniques used, namely tests in the form of three problem solving questions and interviews with students to obtain data information in more depth. The subjects in this study were 9 students of Palembang State Junior High School 9 who came from 3 grade levels, namely class VII, VIII, and IX. The results of this study show that the students of the dominant middle school do 2 activities of mathematical thinking in the form of abstraction, namely observation of patterns and conjecturing. Often in solving problem solving questions junior high school students also carry out specialization activities, but in practice junior high school students still rarely solve problem solving questions using generalization activities and testing conjectures.
