  • Wind energy is one of the most potential renewable energy to be a major source of renewable energy for this modern world and the most effective solution to address the issues of limited fossil energy and global warming. To utilize wind energy it takes a wind turbine for Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). This study focus on the conversion of wind energy into DC micro-scale electrical energy. The wind turbine that has been made is a Savonius vertical axis wind turbine with two overlap blades. The wind turbine is made with a rotor height of 0.2 m, a diameter of 0.15 m turbine, a overlap ratio of 0.2 and an end plate diameter of 0.17 m. The wind turbine was tested experimentally using a subsonic wind tunnel with 10 variations in wind speed from 5.01-11.85 m/s to study the effect of wind speed on turbine performance and the resulting electric power. The turbine shaft is directly connected to the DC generator so that the generator rotation speed is equal to the turbine rotation speed. Generator is given a load of LED lights 2-5 VDC 7 W and measured turbine rotation, voltage and electric current. From the research results obtained that the higher wind speed given will make the turbine rotation be higher too, so that the generated electricity generator will also be higher. The highest wind turbine rotation is 970.4 rpm at wind speed of 11.85 m/s while the highest voltage, current and power generated are 4.15 V, 0.58 A and 2.407 W at wind speed 11.85 m/ s. The highest tip speed ratio is 0.645 at wind speed of 11.35 m/s and the highest overall efficiency is 8.74 % at wind speed of 10.24 m/s.
