  • Expansive clay is a soil that is susceptible to volume changes caused by changes in the water content of the soil pores. To overcome this problem, a chemical stabilization method is needed, one of which is by adding stabilization material in the form of paper mill waste ash (ALPK). This study aims to determine the shear strength of expansive clay stabilized with ALPK by testing the unconfined compressive strength with reference to ASTM 2166-85 and direct shear with reference to ASTM 2166-68. Variations in the addition of ALPK tested are 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%. The results of the unconfined compressive strength showed that the maximum percentage occurred in the variation of 6% ALPK 7 day of curing period with the value of compressive strength (qu) and soil cohesion (Cu) is 0.970 kg/cm2 and 0.485 kg/cm2. In the direct shear test variation of 6% ALPK 7 day of curing period obtained cohesion value (c), shear angle (φ) and soil shear strength (τ) maximum of 0.483 kg/cm2, 24.8o and 1.406 kg/cm2.
