  • One of denture cleansing methods chosen by denture users is the mechanical method that is brushing removable denture by brush bristles and cleanser paste, but this method is able to cause surface roughness of heat cured acrylic resin. Toothbrush found in the market has a stiffness variation such as soft and medium bristle brush. Cleaning substance commonly used at present is toothpaste, while a specific cleanser paste is available for cleaning dentures. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stiffness of bristles brush and cleanser paste on the surface roughness of heat cured acrylic resin. Thirty two acrylic resin specimens were divided into 4 groups: group A and B were specimens brushed with toothpaste using soft and medium brush bristles, then group C and D were specimens brushed with a specific paste of denture cleanser using soft and medium brush bristles. The specimens were brushed two times a day 2 minutes each for 13 days. The surface roughness measurement were taken at the pretest and posttest using Surface Texture Measuring Instrument. The data were tested statistically by paired T test, one way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni. One way ANOVA test at posttest showed surface roughness (μm) for group A (0,2600±0,4472); B (0,3975±0,4950); C (0,2350±0,1414) and D (0,3125±0,3327). Post hoc Bonferroni test showed that there were significant differences in surface roughness (p<0,05) between groups except group A with group C and D. In conclusion, brushing using soft and medium brush bristles with two types of cleanser paste increased the surface roughness of heat cured acrylic resin.
