  • Overweight is an imbalanced nutritional status due to excessive nutritional intake resulting in an energy imbalance between food consumption and energy expenditure. Overweight in adolescents needs to get attention, because overweight that occurs in adolescence tends to continue into adulthood (Khomsan, 2003). This situation needs to be watched out because overweight is a risk factor for various non-communicable diseases, including high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and various types of cancer (Morril & Chin, 2004). Overweight also affects the psychic, which can reduce self-confidence and depression (Barasi, 2007). WHO (2017) states that overweight is associated with more deaths worldwide than underweight. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of overweight in adolescents at Palembang Methodist 1 SMP. This study uses a cross sectional design. This study used primary data taken at Palembang Methodist 1 SMP in 2018. The sample of this study were Palembang Methodist 1 SMP students who had normal and overweight nutritional status totaling 98 respondents. The sampling method uses stratified random sampling. The results of univariate analysis showed 30.6% of students overweight at Palembang Methodist 1 SMP in 2018. The results of bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between the frequency of fast food consumption (p-value = 0.002), frequency of soft drinks consumption (p-value = 0.047), physical activity (p-value = 0.035) and sleep duration (p-value = 0.017) for the incidence of overweight in adolescents at Palembang Methodist 1 SMP. Suggestions for schools are expected to make prevention and over nutrition programs and make an evaluation report on the nutritional status of students who recommend suggestions for follow-up by parents. Students are advised to pay more attention to their nutritional status by monitoring their weight and height periodically so that they can control their nutritional status and do a healthy lifestyle.
