  • This research is descriptive research that aims to identify students mathematical communication ability in solving PISA problems on numbers pattern material through PBL The subjects for the research were 28 students from grade VIII.3 of SMP Negeri 1 Indralaya Selatan. The instructional process adjusted with principles and learning phases of PBL approach. The data collection technique used in this research is written test consisted of 3 essay problems and interview in order to obtain supporting data. Based on the result, it is known that students' mathematical communication ability in solving PISA problems on numbers pattern material using PBL approach as follows: 1 student has very high categorized mathematical communication ability, 7 students have high categorized mathematical communication ability, 11 students have moderate categorized mathematical communication ability, and 9 students have low categorized mathematical communication ability. The most frequent ability that appeared was strategic ability and the least frequent one was sociolinguistic ability.
