  • One of the various types of problematic soil is expansive clay. Expansive clay soil has an extreme shrink/swell behaviour due to the changes of water content. This unfavorable behaviour may cause some damage, so it is necessary to improve its unfavorable behaviour so that building a construction of expansive clay is doable. There are various ways to improve expansive clay soil, one of them is by using waste as stabilizer material. In this study, the waste used as stabilizer is canned Sprite (a soda beverage). The can waste is cut into the smallest possible size (1 mm - 5 mm). This laboratory scale experimental study is based on ASTM California Bearing Ratio (CBR) soaked test. The percentage of can waste used in this study varied in 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%. The CBR (soaked) value for expansive clay soil is 5.51% for 0.1 penetration and 4.55% for 0.2 penetration. The optimum CBR value of stabilized soil is 8,40% for 0.1 penetration and 6.68% for 0.2 penetration with 8% can waste percentage. The optimum swelling value obtained from the test shows a significant decrease after stabilization, from 2% to 1.10% with 10% can waste percentage.
