  • Areca extract (Areca catechu L.) was formulated into a mouthwash that aims to overcome caries. Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) contains tannin compounds that proanthocyanidin which can inhibit the enzymatic activity of glucosyltransferase from Streptoccus mutans. The ethanol extract of areca nut was formulated in three mouthwash formulas with variations in extract concentration of 1,25 %, 2,5 % and 5 %. Areca nut extracted by maceration using ethanol 96%. Mouthwashes was analyzed by using organoleptic, pH, specific gravity, stability and antibacterial activity. Antibacterial activity test employed agar diffusion method with paper disc divided into five groups, that was three mouthwash formulas with variations in extract concentration of 1,25 %, 2,5 % and 5 %, positive controls (minosep®) and negative control (formula without extract). The inhibition diameter zone measure was scaled by using ImageJ®. The higher concentration of extract with the increasing of antibacterial test against Streptoccus mutans. The results showed that the variations in the concentration of extracts affected organoleptic, pH, viscosity and specific gravity of the formulas. The inhibition zone was caused by the mouthwash with extract concentration of 1,25 % was 3,307 ± 0,887 mm, concentration of 2,5 % was 6,111 ± 0,290 mm and 5 % was 7,851 ± 1,272 mm.
