  • This text examines the isues around social structure and function in punguan Toga Nainggolan and the ways to preserve relationship pattern inside punguan. This study used the qualitative method with descriptive analytics strategy. While conducting this study, purposive sampling was used in order to determine the subjects, alongside Talcott Parsons structural functional theory. The results showed that Structure and Social Function of punguan Toga Nainggolan for Bataknese in Palembang is static because of the strong influence of philosophical values of Batak culture-dalihan na tolu, the effect of urban modernization and high mobilization. The simple structure and static stewardship of punguan doesn’t make any social functions and services obstructed such as: visitation, mourn, and contribute to wedding culture ceremonial. Basic formation of these punguan are to unify Bataknese with the same lineage in Palembang, by creating a hometown atmosphere in overseas and keep preserving Batak culture in urban areas especially Palembang which is the provincial capital of South Sumatera with high levels of ethnic, religious, and racial diversity.
