PERAN TUMBUHAN ARACEAE SEBAGAI INANG ALTERNATIF PENTALONIA NIGRONERVOSA PADA PENULARAN BANANA BUNCHY TOP VIRUS (BBTV)
Daftar Isi:
- Banana bunchy top disease, is a very important disease in banana producing countries all over the world. The disease is devastating because the infected plant would never produce fruit or produced unmarketable fruit. The disease is transmitted by banana aphid called Pentalonia nigronervosa persistently and sirculatively. The aphid is reported to be able to live and breed on alternative hosts belong to Family Araceae. Considering the abundance of Araceous plants, especially the wild ones, surrounding banana plantation, it is important to study the role of the araceous alternative host of P. nigronervosa in the transmission of banana bunchy top virus, whether the alternative host reduced the vector infectivity or the contrary. In this research, three species of araceous crops were used, namely aquatic taro, ornamental caladi and rodent tuber. The objective of the research was to reveal the role of araceous alternative host of P. nigronervosa in the reduction or elimination of infectivity of infective P. nigronerosa. The results showed that infective P. nigronerosa infested on the three araceous crops for a week still had their ability to transmit banana bunchy top virus, showed by the banana bunchy top virus infection symptoms such as morse code, leaf narrowing and bunchy top, even though not all symptoms appear on infected plants. Rodent tuber appeared to have the highest ability to reduce the infectivity of P. nigronervosa, shown by the lowest infection frequency, compared to the other two araceous crops, aquatic taro and ornamental caladi. The appearance of BBTV infection symptoms on banana plants inoculated with BBTV by P. nigronervosa from three species of araceous plants indicated that the araceous alternative host of P.nigronervvosa could not totally eliminated the infectivity of the vector.
