- The barrier layer is a layer that maintains the stability of the ocean layer between the mixed layer (ML) and isothermal layer (IL). The study area is in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean at the site of the Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic (PIRATA) buoy located at 6°S, 8°E during the period of April 2015 - March 2016. This study examines the temporal variations of the barrier layer and the formation mechanism of the layer. The results indicate that the barrier layer has a maximum thickness of 15.7m occurring in April 2015 and a minimum thickness of 0.3m occurring in September 2015. The variation of the barrier layer thickness is closely related to the wind variations along the equatorial Atlantic Ocean and along the western coast of Africa. Westerly winds and northerly winds will generate downwelling Kelvin waves, thereby suppressing the thermocline (isothermal layer is deepened) so that the barrier layer gets thicker. The situation is reversed when the easterly winds blow along the equator and the southerly winds blow along the western coast of Africa.
