- Belawan Sicanang village was one of villages in sub-district of Medan Belawan. Mangroves were found in this region. However, along with the development of human activities, it could threaten the existence of mangrove ecosystem with the action of logging and land conversion. This research aimed to describe the causes of mangrove degradation and the management strategy of mangrove ecosystem in Belawan Sicanang village. It was conducted on February – April 2017 and used descriptive qualitative and SWOT Analysis for sustainable mangrove ecosystem management strategy. The calculation of mangrove cover changes in 2007-2017 period, obtained that mangrove area is reduced about 120 hectares. The causes of mangrove forest degradation in Belawan Sicanang village were due to the used of land for economic activities such as aquaculture, human needs of wood and the absence of regulations in the protection and management of mangrove ecosystem in this area as well as the leaked of law enforcement over land conversion that occurred. SWOT analysis quadrant for mangrove ecosystem management in Belawan Sicanang village found at 1st quadrant which is Growth Oriented Quadrant, it means in this village has the strength and opportunity so that it can mobilize all internal potential to exploit the existing opportunities. First quadrant brings in the S-O strategy which become alternative priority Strategy for sustainable mangrove ecosystem management that was developing community-based management such as conservation, ecotourism and products of mangrove.Keywords : Mangrove, Management Strategy, SWOT, Belawan Sicanang Village.
