- This research is a correlation research that goals to recognize whether there is a significant correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and their speaking ability at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The subject of this research is students at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru and the object is correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and their speaking ability. Where, the population of this research is the eleventh grade students, they are 340 students. The sample is XI IPA 1, and technique that used in this research is cluster sampling. In collecting data, the research used two tests. Both were parts of speech mastery and speaking ability tests. The formulas used to analyze the data gathered from respondents were output SPSS 16.0 version and Pearson Product moment. Based on the research findings, the students’ parts of speech mastery were in enough level. It was based on the result of the test given. Dealing with students’ classification score, it can be proved from mean of students parts of speech score that was 62.12, categorized as enough level. On the other hand, the mean score of students’ speaking ability was 67.00 categorized as good level. The data analysis is concluded that rxy (0.054) is lower than rtable, where rt = 0.349 in critical coefficient 5% and rt = 0.449 in critical coefficient 1%. It means that ro < rt. it indicates that there is no significant correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and their speaking ability at SMAN 12 Pekanbaru.
