- This research is experimental research. This research has 3 formulations of the problems they are how is students’ writing ability taught by using descriptive words strategy? How is students’ writing ability taught without using descriptive words strategy? And is there any significant effect of using descriptive words strategy toward writing ability on descriptive paragraph of the second grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Bangkinang? The subject of this research was the second grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Bangkinang. The writer took two classes at the school as population which consisted of 240 students. Then, all of the population was taken as sample. Each of class named control class and experimental class. The variable involved in this research was the use of descriptive words strategy as x variable and writing ability as y variable. The type of the research used was quasi-experimental research. The writer took pretest-post-test non-equivalent group design. The technique of collecting data was test. The test was used to know the students’ writing ability. The first step was done by giving pre-test to both of classes. Then, the writer gave treatment to experimental class for 6 meetings, while the control class was given the conventional technique. In the next step, the writer gave post-test to both of classes. After analyzing the data by using SPSS program, it was obtained that tobserved (to) was greater than ttable (tt). It means, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, there is significant effect of using descriptive words strategy toward writing ability on descriptive paragraph of the second grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Bangkinang.
