  • Based on the writer’s preliminary observation, it was found the problem in speaking English. The problem are some of the students were not able to speak English fluently, some of the students are not able to pronounce word accurately, some of the students are not able to speak grammatically, some students have few vocabularies in speaking. So, the researcher was interested in offering fishbowl strategy as an alternative solution for students’ speaking ability. This research used quasi-experimental research. Two groups of pretestposttest design were used; one group was experimental group getting the treatment by using fishbowl strategy. In contrast, another did not get it and involved as control group. The population of the research was 152 students, and the sample was 60 students that consisted of two classes. The sampling technique chosen was cluster sampling. The oral presentation test was given to both groups in order to assess the students’ ability in speaking hortatory exposition. Mean, standard deviation and t test were used to analyze the quantitative data. The results revealed that although both groups showed improvement on ability in speaking hortatory exposition, the experimental group given fishbowl strategy showed better speaking performance in which t test= 11.563. Thus, fishbowl strategy has an important role in developing students’ ability in speaking hortatory exposition. In conclusion, using Fishbowl Strategy has given a better effect for Students’ Speaking Ability at the Second Year of Senior High School 1 Sungai Pakning of Bengkalis Regency.
