  • The purpose of this research was to find out the significant effect of using pictures through Background Knowledge Strategy on students’ vocabulary mastery and writing ability at Islamic Junior High School of Islamic Boarding School Technology of Riau Pekanbaru. It was carried out by using a quasiexperimental design. The subject of the research was the seventh-grade students and 2 classes were involved, namely VII PA 1 as an experimental group and VII PA 2 as a control group. Each group consisted of 16 students. Tests and observations were used in the process of data collection. Then, independent sample t-test, paired sample t-test and effect size formula were used to analyze the data. Finally, it was found that there was a significant difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery and writing ability post-test between the experimental group and control group. Both the significant values were higher than 0.8 and it was categorized as a high significance. It meant that there was a significant effect of using pictures through Background Knowledge strategy on the students’ vocabulary mastery and writing ability at the Islamic Junior High School of Islamic Boarding School Technology of Riau Pekanbaru
