However, based on the preliminary&#xD; research, it was found that students&#x2019; writing is not good at the school.Then,&#xD; considering some factors influencing writing, it was also found that they still have&#xD; mistakes to use grammar. So, this research was aimed to find out the correlation&#xD; between students&#x2019; mastery in English grammatical rules and their ability in&#xD; writing narrative at State Islamic Senior High School 1Kampar. This research is&#xD; correlational research. There were two tests used in collecting the data for this&#xD; research: grammar test and writing ability test. The population of this research is&#xD; 190 students. Then, in taking the sample, the researcher used simple random&#xD; sampling and chose 29 students from all classes. By using product moment&#xD; formula through SPSS 21.0 in analyzing the data,the mean score of students&#x2019;&#xD; grammar mastery was 71 categorized as good level. On the other hand, the mean&#xD; score of students&#x2019; writing ability was 75. It is also categorized as good level. The&#xD; data analysis is concluded that robserved is 0.852.With degree of significance 1%,&#xD; the score of rtable obtained is 0.470, therefore, robserved&gt;rtable (0.852 &gt; 0.470);&#xD; meanwhile, with degree of significance 5%, the score of rtable obtained is 0.367,&#xD; therefore, robserved&gt;rtable (0.852&gt; 0.367); it means that Ha was accepted, or there&#xD; is a significant correlation. The writer also found that 72.59% of tenth grade&#xD; students&#x2019; writing ability at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Kampar was&#xD; influenced by grammar mastery.
