  • The aim of this study was to find out the effect of using PENS strategy on students’ writing ability and their motivation. The research design was a quasiexperimental research with the type was a pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design. It involves 60 participants that consisted of one experimental group and one control group of students of SMAN 3 Duri Mandau. Eight research questions and eight hypotheses were posed in this study in order to find out the significant difference between pre test and post test on students’ writingand their motivation. Pretest and posttest were administered in this study and independent sample t-test and paired sample t-test are used to analyze the data. The research result showed that there was a significant effect of using PENS strategy on students’ writing ability and their motivationbecause the significance was 0,000 < 0,05, it means that Ha is accepted while H0 is rejected. At last, it could be concluded that PENS strategycould be applied in teaching Writing at SMAN 3 Duri mandau.
