A Comparison between the Effect of Using GIST and GMA Strategies on Students’ Reading Comprehension at SMPN 40 Pekanbaru

- The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was a significant effect of using GIST strategy (Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text ) and GMA (Group Mapping Activity ) on students’ reading ability at SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The type of the research was a quasi-experimental design. Students in grade 8 of the school were the subject of this research. In this research, two classes were involved, namely a class as an experimental group 1 and another class asan experimental group 2. The sample consisted of 84 students that were selected from 165 students in the population. In collecting data, multiple-choice tests and observations were done. To analyze the collected data, t test for independent and paired samples and effect size equations were used. Finally, it was found that the significant values were 0.000 and 0.000. The values were smaller than p value (0.005). It means that there was a significant effect of using GIST strategy and GMA on the students’ reading ability based on the results of posttest in experimental groups 1 and 2. Besides, the values of eta square were 0.70 and 0.55. In other words, there was a significant effect of using GISTstrategy and GMA on the students’ ability in reading descriptive text and the effect size was categorized as medium. In conclusion, GIST strategy and GMA can be applied in teaching and learning process of readingat the school. Keywords: GISTStrategy, GMA Strategy, Students’ Reading Ability
