Daftar Isi:
- The main purpose of this research was to compare students’ ability to comprehend English texts by using Think Pair Share and Numbered Head Together strategies. Based on a preliminary observation in SMPN 4 Tambang, it was found that many students found difficulties to comprehend descriptive texts. The design was causal-comparative, which mainly focused on quantitative approach. The research subject was seventh-grade students in 2016/2017 school year. Then, the object was a comparison of the students’ ability to comprehend the texts by using Think Pair Share and Numbered Head Together strategies. The sampling technique was cluster sampling. Two classes with a total of 50 students from VII.H class (25 students) and VII.I class (25 students) were taken as the samples. The students’ ability to comprehend the text was measured by using a reading comprehension test. Then, the results of the test were analyzed through comparison of means (T‐test) by using SPSS version 20. The analysis results show that there is a significant difference of ability to comprehend the texts between the students in Think Pair Share class and Numbered Head Together class. Based on the analysis results, it is found that the total score of students in Think Pair Share class is 1892, with a mean score of 75.68. The total score of students in Numbered Head Together class is 2084, with a mean score of 83.36. Furthermore, the results of hypothesis test show that p=0.005, the value of Sig. (2tailed) is smaller than 0.05(p<0.005). For that reason, the null hypothesis is accepted and the alternative hypothesis is rejected. Thus, there is a significant difference of ability to comprehend text between students in both classes. Finally, it can be seen that the use of Numbered Head Together strategy gives a better result than the use of Think Pair Share strategy.
