THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING AND THEIR ABILITY IN WRITING ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION AT STATE ISLAMIC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2 MODEL PEKANBARU

- Critical thinking plays a major rule in writing. It means that ideally, those who have good critical thinking will also good at writing. However, based on the preliminary research, it was found that some students who had the characteristics of a good critical thinker still did not produce a good writing. therefore, this research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ Critical Thinking and their ability in writing analytical exposition of the eleventh grade at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Model Pekanbaru. This research is a correlational research. There were two kinds of instrument used in collecting the data for this research. For critical thinking, the writer used questionnaire. Then, for writing ability, the writer made the students write a brief analytical exposition text by choosing one of the provided topics. The population of the research was 295 students. Then, in taking the sample, the writer used cluster random sampling and chose 55 students from two classes as the sample. By using product moment correlation inferential analysis through SPSS 16.0 in analyzing the data, the researcher found that the sig. t is 0.009, smaller than the significant alpha of 0.05 (sig.t < 0.05). It means that Ha was accepted, or there is a significant correlation between the students’ critical thinking and their ability in writing analytical exposition. The writer also found that 12.25% Writing ability of the eleventh grade students at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Model Pekanbaru was influenced by critical thinking. Then, the other 87.75% was influenced by other factors. Keywords: Correlation, Critical Thinking, Writing Ability, Analytical Exposition.
