  • This research was correlational research. It was conducted to find out the significant relationship between vocabulary knowledge and students’ writing ability at the tenth grade of Islamic Senior High School Pekanbaru. There were two variables used in this research. The first was X variable (vocabulary knowledge) and the second was Y variable (writing ability). The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of Islamic Senior High School Hasanah Pekanbaru, while the object of this research was vocabulary knowledge and writing ability. The population of the research was 33 students. The researcher used total sampling by taking the population as the sample.The instruments used in this research were test. They were multiple choice test consisted of 30 items and writing test. For writing test, the researcher asked the students to write a descriptive paragraph. Descriptive analysis was used to know vocabulary knowledge and students’ writing ability on descriptive paragraph whereas Pearson Product Moment Correlation Technique through SPSS 17.0 program was used in order to measure the relationship between the two variables which quantified the strength as well as direction of the relationship. Based on the results, it is found that the mean score of students’ vocabulary knowledge was 72.91 while the mean score of students’ writing ability on descriptve paragraph is 73.58. In terms of the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and writing ability on descriptive paragraph, the researcher found that the sigt=0.000<a(0.05). It can be concluded Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Then, R determinant value is 0.81. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between vocabulary knowledge and students’ writing ability on descriptive paragraph at the tenth grade of Islamic Senior High School Pekanbaru and the contribution size of vocabulary knowledge is 81% with positive direction. .
