THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ WRITING ATTITUDE AND WRITING ACHIEVEMENT AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF MADRASAH ALIYAH DARUL HIKMAH PEKANBARU

- This research was a correlational research which was aimed to know the correlation between students’ writing attitude and writing achievement at Madrasah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. There were two variables used in this research. The first was X variable (writing attitude) and Y (writing achievement). The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students at Madrasah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru and the objects of this research were students’ writing attitude and writing achievement. The population of this research was all of the eleventh grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru that consisted of 176 people. The sample of this research was 44 students which were taken by using simple random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher distributed questionnaires to the respondent to assess students’ writing attitude consisting of 20 statements. The questionnaires were based on the indicators of writing attitude which were adopted from Writing Attitude Survey by Rafanello. Besides, in assessing students’ writing achievement, the researcher conducted written test in writing narrative paragraph to the students and the score was evaluated by two raters. In this research, the data were analyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient through SPSS 22.00. The result of this research showed that sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000. It can be stated that 0.000 < 0.05. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.681. In conclusion, there is a significant positive correlation between students’ writing attitude and writing achievement. The researcher also found that 46.4% of writing attitude could influence writing achievement. It means that students with positive attitude get better writing achievement than the negative one.
