THE EFFECT OF USING SELF-EXPLANATION READING TRAINING (SERT) STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION AT ELEVENTH GRADE OF MA DARUL HIKMAH PEKANBARU

- Based on the researcher’s preliminary observation and interview from the English teacher at MA Darul Hikmah ekanbaru, it was found that some of the eleventh grade students had problems in reading comprehension, especially in report text. They could not reach the passing grade (KKM). The main focus of this research was to find out whether there was a significant difference between using and without using Self-Explanation Reading Training (SERT) Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension at MA Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The researcher formulated the problems that would be answered by using the quantitative research. This research had two variables using Self-Explanation Reading Training (SERT) Strategy as an independent variable and students’ reading comprehension as a dependent variable. The type of research was a Quasiexperimental research. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of MA Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The researcher took two classes: experimental and control. There were 44 students as sample from 153 students of eleventh grade at MA Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The research was conducted from August to September 2016. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choice test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used an independent ttest formula by using SPSS 16 version. Based on the analysis of T-test Formula, Ha is accepted because the sig. value is 0.000<0.05. The research was conclude that there is significant difference of using Self-Explanation Reading Training (SERT) Strategy on reading comprehension in report text of the eleventh grade students at MA Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru.
