  • Based on the preliminary research, it was found that the eighth grade students of Junior High School 2 Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir get difficulties in speaking. It can be seen some of students were not able to express their ideas orally in speaking. The aimed of the research is to find out the correlation students’ knowledge of vocabulary and their speaking ability of the eighth grade of Junior High School 2 Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir. The design of this research is correlational research design. The population and sample of the research is the eight grade students at Junior High School 2 Rimba Melintang. The number of sample is selected by using simple random sampling technique. To get the data, the researcher gave multiple choice test and oral test, and then analyzed the data by using pearson product moment calculated by SPSS 16.0 program. After analyzing the data, the result of sig.t .009 is smaller than 0.05 (sig.≤ 0.05). It could be stated that Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. In other words, there is a significant correlation between students’ knowledge of vocabulary and their speaking ability at Junior High School 2 Rimba Melintang Rokan Hilir.
