  • Based on the preliminary observation, it was found that the first year sudents of SMAN 6 Pekanbaru had difficulties in reading comprehension such as some students were not able to identify the social function of the text, some students were not able to identify the generic structure of the text, and some others students were not able to identify language features of the text. The aim of this research was to find out whether there is or not siginificant correlation between students’ reading habit in English books and their reading comprehension of the first year at SMAN 6 Pekanbaru. This was a correlational research design, questionnaire was used to determine students’ reading habit in English books and the multiple choice test was used to determine their reading comprehension. The population of the reseach was all classes of the fisrt year students at SMAN 6 Pekanbaru which the total number was 211 students. Then, in determining the sample the researcher used simlple random sampling technique. The total number of the sample was 42 students. The researcher used Pearson Product Moment correlatition coefficient , the result of the analysis was calculated by SPSS 17.0 program. From the data analysis with the Pearson Product-Moment, the result obtained was r(40) = 0.663, p< 0.01 . It can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Hα is accepted. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ reading habit in English books and their reading comprehension of the first year at SMAN 6 Pekanbaru. .
