THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE AND THEIR LISTENING COMPREHENSION AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL MUHAMMADIYAH 1 PEKANBARU

- This research was a correlational research. It was conducted to find out the significant relationship between vocabulary knowledge and their listening comprehension at Senior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru. Based on the writer’s preliminary research, the students’ had problems in listening comprehension. The problems were seen in their inability to achieve the passing grade. The writes formulated the problems into three research question that was answered by using quantitative research. There were 2 variables that used in this research. Variable X was vocabulary knowledge and variable Y was listening comprehension. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of Senior High School Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru, while the object of this research was vocabulary knowledge and listening comprehension. The instruments used in this research were tests. For vocabulary knowledge, the writer used written test in the form of multiple choices.Then, for listening comprehension, the writer used test in the form of multiple choices, matching word, and cloze task. The population of the research was 256 students. Then, in taking the sample, the writer used simple random sampling Therefore, the total of sample was 64 students. By using product moment formula through SPSS 22.0 in analyzing the data, the writer found that, the sig. value was 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000<0.05. Then, the correlation coefficient was 0.600 at medium level, thus Ha was accepted. The writer concluded that there was significant relationship between students’ knowledge in vocabulary and their listening comprehension at Senior high School muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru.
