  • This study was aimed at finding out the correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading comprehension of narrative texts at the tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading comprehension of some kinds of narrative texts. From 136 students of the population which consisted of 4 classes, the researcher took the 7 students of each class so the total sample is 28 students at the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used gap-filling-task to measure the mastery of simple past tense, and multiple choices test to measure the students’ reading comprehension of some kinds of narrativet text. The researcher analyzed the data by using Spearman Rank Order Coefficient formula of SPSS Version 20.0 because the data was not normally distributed. Based on the results, it was found that the mean of the mastery simple past tense was 67.85 (sufficient level), while their reading comprehension of narrative text was 64.82 (sufficient level). In terms of the correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading comprehension of narrative texts, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.003 < 0.05. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of Spearman Rho (ρ) was 0.538 which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading comprehension of narrative texts at the tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya.
