THE CORRELATION AMONG STUDENTS’ READING HABIT, LEARNING ATTITUDE AND THEIR WRITING COMPETENCE AT ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM

  • The objectives of this study are to know (1) whether there is correlation between reading habit and writing competence? (2) there is correlation between learning attitude and writing competence (3) there are correlation among students reading habit, learning attitude and writing competence. The writer used total sampling which means that the sample is 112 students. The data were collected through questionnaire about students’ reading habit and learning attitude and also through writing test. The findings of the study showed that most students categorized as poor readers, the most students categorized as having positive attitude in learning activities. The result of students’ writing competence showed that 33% of their achievements which categorize are poor. Then, the results indicated that the coefficient correlation was r=0.36. It means that those variables of students’ reading habit, learning attitude and their writing competence are positively correlated. The significance value is 0.704 then the results 0.704 < 0.05 it means that Null hypothesis (Ho) rejected and Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) accepted. It showed that students’ reading habit, learning attitude and their writing competence are significantly correlated. The regression analysis resulted R Square 0.018, which means only 18% reading habit and learning attitude contribute to the students’ writing achievement.
