  • The aims of this research was to investigate the correlation between self-esteem and English reading achievement. The purpose of this research was to investigate whether there is significant correlation between self-esteem and English reading achievement. This approach uses a quantitative approach using correlation and non-experimental design. The population of this study consisted of 121 students from grade VIII in MTs. S Jambi Laboratory. Researchers used lottery random sampling and get class VIII B, VIII C, and VIII D as samples consisting of 71 students. The data of Research was taken from questionnaire and test reading. To measure the level of self-esteem that students have, the data was taken from a questionnaire developed by The Foreign Language Self-Esteem Scale (FLSES) developed from Hassan (2001). To measure reading ability, a test question from LKS Learning Express LLC in the year 2006 "501 reading comprehension questions-3rd editions", question bank and teacher handbook "Lets' talk for junior high school VIII grade" tailored to the class and curriculum 2013 and has been tested before it with a try out to students who are at the eighth grade as well but different classes with classes that will serve as research samples. Results from the data show that the significant correlation is 0.084 greater than 0.05 (5%). That means there is no significant correlation between self-esteem and reading achievement of English. However, according to the interpretation table the coefficient of reliability remains a correlation between the two variables although low with r obtained 0.206 which lies in the low interpretation.
