THE CORRELATION BETWEEN READING ATTITUDE TOWARD READING PROFICIENCY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHT GRADE STUDENTS’ AT SMP PGRI 2 JAMBI

- The objectives of this study were to find out (1) how the students’ reading attitude (2) how the students’ reading proficiency (3) the relationship between reading attitude and reading proficiency. The research design was correlational study. All of the eight students of SMP PGRI 2 Kota Jambi were the population with the total number only 25 students. The writer used total sampling which means that the sample is 25 students. The data were collected by questionnaire about students’ reading attitude and reading test for students’ reading proficiency. The findings of the study showed that most the students’ reading attitude there is 92% categorized as positive attitude, then there is 8% categorized as negative attitude. Then the result of students’ reading proficiency showed 12% which categorize are weak. Then, the result showed that coefficient correlation was r=0,285. It means that those variables reading attitude and reading proficiency are positively correlated. However, r=0,285 was considered very low correlation.The result of regression analysis found that R Square 0.081, it means only 8,1% reading attitude contribute to the students’ reading proficiency.
