- This research discussed The Concept of Sadness in Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s Selected Poems. The purpose of this research is first, to find out how the concept of sadness defected Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s selected poems. Second, to find out the background of Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s life in creating her poems. The writer used expressive theory by Gerry Mackie, biographical approach from Guerin L. Wilfred, and the concept of sadness by Mariko Shirai and Naoto Suzuki to analyze the data. The data of this research are taken from eight selected Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s poems such as The Sleep (1840), A thought for a lonely death-bed (1837), Grief (1842), I see thine image through my tears to night (1845), The runaway slave at pilgrims (1846), Auror a Leigh (1856), A SeaSide Walk (1836), and Pain in Pleasure (1853). The writer used qualitative method in order to reach the objectives of the research. By using qualitative descriptive method, the writer needs to find reliable and valid data based on the theories. In collecting and analyzing the data, the writer uses documentation technique and descriptive analysis to analyze the data. The result of this research is first, showed that there are two concepts of sadness in Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s selected poems, there are loss and failure. Second, Loss divided into four types namely loss of object, loss of life, loss of person, and loss of human rights. Moreover, the sadness induces by loss is higher than failure. Third, The background of Elizabeth Barrett Browning‘s life which influences her poems are from the events in her life that she has been through, There are painful experiences, disappointment, failure, and loss
