  • Many legal rules have changed before the 2009 elections that have impacted women representations. Affirmative action is an effort to boost women's opportunities to enter the political world of legislation starting from the screening or recruitment stage. However, a number of weaknesses were found in the legislation which resulted in a decrease in both the percentage and quality of female candidates in Jambi Province. This paper aims to examine women candidates in the step of candidacy, especially in Jambi Province. In the 2009 elections, the number of female candidates in the Preliminary List of Candidates for provincial representatives increased compared to the previous year's election. Compare to males, yet it but still did not meet the 30% quota. Another problem was that there were quite a lot of candidates who have been recruited in 2019 from outside the region, because of the rules that allowed this. The effectiveness of the candidates in understanding and solving problems in their electoral districts needs to be further studied, especially in relation to this domicile.
