- This study analyzed the types and the functions of code mixing found in Supernova novel. The approach of this study is qualitative approach because the data source taken from conversations and narrations of Supernova “Akar” Indonesia novel. The data were analyzed by explaining in the form of sentences and paragraphs. The writer collected the data to find the types and the functions of code mixing. The theory from Peter Stocwell was used to analyze the types of code mixing. Stockwell has three types of code mixing, they are : intrasentential mixing, tag switching and intersentential mixing. The theory from Hymes was used to analyze the funtions of code mixing. Hymes devided six functions of code mixing, they are: metalinguistic, expressive, directive, referential, poetic, and phatic. The result of this study found that the dialogues and conversations have categorized as the types of code mixing, There were three types of code mixing : intrasentential mixing, intersentential mixing and tag switching. In addition, there were five functions of code mixing : metalinguistic, expressive, directive, referential, and poetic. Keywords : Sociolinguistics, code mixing, qualitative, novel, Dewi Lestari
