  • This study concerns on the analysis of sociolinguistic that is aimed to find out the types and functions of grammatical features of African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) in Eminem’s song lyrics by comparing with Standard English. AAVE is one of the dialects spoken by not only black American but also white American, hence Eminem. Eminem uses AAVE in his song lyrics. AAVE is different with Standard English grammatically, phonologically and morphologically. This study uses descriptive qualitative. This study uses two theories which are applied by Fought (2006) and Jakobson (1987). The result of this study shows that there are 8 types of grammatical features of AAVE found in 28 data collected from five song lyrics of Eminem, they are Absence of Plural -s marking, Absence of third person singular -s marking, Zero Copula, Unstressed been, Completive Done, Use Ain’t for Negation, Negative Concord and Special Auxiliary (Steady, Come, and Finna), the dominant type found in the lyrics is Use ain’t for negation. This study also shows that there are six functions found in Eminem’s song lyrics, they are Referential, Emotive or Expressive, Conative or Directive, Poetic, Metalingual and Phatic and referential function is the dominant function found in the lyrics.
