  • ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TESTING ON BAY LEAF ETHANOL EXTRACT TOWARDS Streptococcus pyogenes AND Klebsiella pneumoniae BACTERIA GROWTH ABSTRACT Streptococcus pyogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae are pathogen bacterias that causes infections that experiences resistance. Bay leaf contains alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, tannin, steroid, terpenoid, and essential oils. This experiment’s purpose is to observe the antibacterial activities on bay leaf ethanol extract towards S.pyogenes and K.pneumoniae. This research is a true experiment designed with completely randomized design, using Kirby-Bauer diffusion discs method on five concentrations (10%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%) work controls (chloramphenicol 30 μg) and negatif control (96% ethanol). Results shows that the bay leaf ethanol extract is able to inhibit S.pyogenes with inhibition diameter zone of 80% (17,66 mm), 60% (16,64 mm), 40% (14,72 mm), 20% (13,56 mm), 10% (10,78 mm), and negatif control (0 mm). One Way Anova testing shows the value of p < α (0,05) which means there are differences in growth inhibition zone of S.pyogenes on various concentration of bay leaf ethanol extract. Bay leaf ethanol extract is able to inhibit K.pneumoniae with diameter zone of 80% (9,38 mm), 60% (8,86 mm), 40% (8,14 mm), 20% (7, 12 mm), 10% (0 mm), and negatif control (0 mm). Kruskal-Wallis testing provides the value of p < α(0,05) so that there are difference in growth inhibition zone of K.pneumoniae on various concentration of bay leaf ethanol extract. In conclusion, this experiment provides that there is an antibacterial activity from bay leaf ethanol extract towards the growth of S.pyogenes and K.Pneumoniae bacteria.
