  • The school environment is an extension of the family in laying the foundation for healthy behavior for school children. In addition, the population of school children aged 6-12 years reaches 40% -50% of the general community, so health education efforts at the target of school children are the first and foremost priority. The lack of interest of students in obtaining information and having never received counseling on maintaining dental and oral health has caused students to be less knowledgeable about maintaining dental and oral health. Therefore, in this study students were given counseling to add information and increase knowledge about maintaining dental and oral health. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge about maintaining dental and oral health before and after counseling for 5th grade students of SDN 19 Pemecutan in 2019. This type of research was a preexperimental design type one group pre-test and post-test. The total number of respondents in the study was 57 students. The type of data collected is the primary data in the form of a description of the level of knowledge and secondary data sourced from the attendance of 5th grade students. The method of collecting data gives pre-counseling questions as a pre-test, then provides counseling and ends by giving post-tests as evaluation. The results showed that the level of knowledge before being given counseling with sufficient categories was 24 people (42.11%), while the level of knowledge after being given counseling was in a very good category as many as 47 people (82.46%). The average level of knowledge before being given counseling was 58.80 (less) while the average level of knowledge after being given counseling was 85.70 (very good). The conclusion of the results of this study is that the average knowledge before and after giving counseling has increased.
