  • Preliminary:One plant that has many benefits in treating diseases is the galangal rhizome (Alpinia galanga). Generally people use the galangal rhizome as a cooking spice and traditional medicine. Galangal rhizome is one of the medicinal plants and spices which has antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of galangal rhizome extract to the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.Method:Ethanol extract of galangal rhizome was obtained by extracting with 70% ethanol solvent using maceration method and the yield of yield was 17.5%. The antibacterial activity of galangal rhizome ethanol extract was tested by hole print diffusion method with concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, 70% ethanol negative control, positive control of amoxicillin injection suspension 0.01% b/v.Results:The results showed that the ethanol extract of galangal rhizome with a concentration of 50%, 75% and 100% can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.Conclusion:The ethanol extract of galangal rhizome with concentration of 50%, 75% and 100% can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus significantly (P < 0,05). The largest inhibition diameter was shown in extracts with a concentration of 100% of 1,03 cm.Keywords: Galangal, Antibacterial, Staphylococcus aureus, Hole molding method.
