The Correlation Between Students Motivation in Learning English as a Foreign Language and Their English Score at SMP Islam Al Azhar Kediri

- Motivation is internal and external factor that stimulates desire and energy in people to be continually interested in and committed to a job, role, or subject, and to exert persistent effort to attain a goal. In learning language, motivation is one of the factors that influence the success of the learning. Students’ motivation in learning English influence to the thair score because motivated students will participate the class actively, and they also have more attention to the material in the class so it makes them easy in receiving the knowlage during the class. The objectives of this research is to know the correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their English score. This study uses correlational quantitative research as the research design. Meanwhile, the instruments of this research are the indonesian translated 33 item motivational questionnaire that adapted from Gardner 1985 Attitude/ Motivation Test Battery and teacher’s document of Mid Test Score of second semester. The sample of this study is 29 students of the seventh and eighth classes of SMP Islam Al Azhar Kediri. The findings of this research showed that 19 (65,51%) students have high motivation and 10 (34,48%) students have mediun motivation in learning English. Whereas, 16 (55,17%) students have score below the KKM, 5 (177,24%) students have score equal to the KKM, and 8 (27,59%) students have score above the KKM. The result of this study describes that the value of significant (sig.) is .619. it means the value of significant (sig.) > than .05, so the null hypothesis cannot be rejected. The null hypothesis states that there is no correlation between students’ motivation in learning English and their English score at SMP Islam Al Azhar Kediri.
