language, especially English. Speaking is the ability to express, convey ideas or
feelings verbally. Researchers found that many students who learn English still
have problems communicating with others because their speaking skills have not
been developed properly and are supported by the learning process in the
classroom which is not yet on target because the techniques used do not work
optimally with the situation. The purpose of this study was to determine the
effectiveness of the use of story completion techniques in the learning process of
speaking for the tenth grade students of SMAN 6 Kediri.
This research methodology use a quasi-experimental design with the
treatment held in three meetings, 2 x 45 minutes for each class. This design uses a
pre-test posttest to determine students' speaking abilities before treatment and
after treatment. The population of this research is the students of class X SMAN 6
Kediri. Samples were taken two classes, one class as an experimental class was X
IPS 1 consisting of 36 students and the other class as a control class was X IPS 2
consisting of 35 students. In collecting data, the researcher used instruments in
pre-test and post-test. Test instruments speak in oral form. After giving a post-test,
the researchers then analyzed the data using SPSS 21.0.
The results of this research showed that the data are normally distributed.
It was proven by the Shapiro-Wilk test that p is (0.266) for pre-test of the
experimental group, p (0.212) for pre-test of the control group, p (0.135) for posttest of the experimental group, and p (0.165) for post-test of the control group.
Those were higher than α (0.05). The Levene’s test showed p (0.920) > α (0.05).
The homogeneity regression showed that p (0.419) > α (0.05). It means there is no
interaction between covariate variables and independent variables. Then, the result
of ANCOVA showed that the significant value p is (0,000) < α (0.05). It was
enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative
hypothesis. Based on the above findings, the researcher concludes that Story
