  • Conventional wood formwork has been the most used formwork in Indonesian construction industry even though it consumes a large amount of wood and produces its waste as well. Meanwhile, there is an innovation called aluminium formwork which is a system based formwork made of aluminium thus can be used up to hundred times and is a low-waste technology. This method of construction has just entered Indonesian industry and not well-known yet. A research is done to identify factors affecting the preferences of contractors in choosing aluminium formwork method for apartment building construction. The research is done through two stages of surveis to contractors those are executing construction of apartment building in Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi area. 31 factors are reduced to 8 through Relative Importance Index (RII) analysis and brought to Analytic Hierarchy Process Analysis to identify the priorities in choosing formwork method and to carry out the best choice upon selecting formwork between conventional wood formwork and the aluminium formwork system. The result shows that floor to floor duration has become contractors’ most concerned factor while choosing formwork method together with the installed price, and level of accuracy and precision of the concrete result. It turns out that the contractors’ preferences in choosing formwork method are aluminium formwork (79%) followed by conventional wood formwork (21%). These findings can be used as a consideration for contractors to start using aluminium formwork due to its excellence compared to conventional wood formwork.
