- Film merupakan salah satu media massa yang berfungsi untuk memberi hiburan dan sebagai cermin yang merefleksikan keadaan dan budaya yang berlaku di masyarakat. Pada tahun 2017, Disney merilis film Beauty and the Beast yang diangkat dari film animasi Beauty and the Beast tahun 1991. Namun, film ini menjadi kontroversial disebabkan adanya gay scene dimana salah satu tokoh dalam film, LeFou, menari bersama dengan laki-laki lain selama 4 detik. Reaksi dan kebijakan setiap negara berbeda, ada yang melarang penayangan dan ada juga yang meloloskan. Indonesia adalah salah satu yang meloloskan film Beauty and the Beast sehingga peneliti tertarik untuk meneliti bagaimana orientasi seksual gay digambarkan dalam film Beauty and the Beast.Peneliti menggunakan semiotika Roland Barthes untuk menginterpretasi data yang dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan dokumentasi scene yang menggambarkan orientasi seksual gay. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah laki-laki gay memiliki perilaku feminin, baik itu dari tingkah lakunya ataupun pakaiannya, walaupun berperilaku feminin tidak selalu berarti seseorang itu gay. Selain itu, gay scene dalam film ini tidak begitu banyak dan film ini lebih memfokuskan cerita asmara antara Belle dan Buruk Rupa. / As a mass medium, film functions to entertain its audience and also to reflect the reality or culture that exist in the society. In 2017, Disney released a remake film of Beauty and the Beast adapted from its animated version released in 1991. However, this film was controversial due to one of its scenes that contains gay moment between one of the characters, LeFou, dancing with another man for at least 4 seconds. Reactions and policies given differ from country to country, some banned the film from their country and others didn’t. Indonesia was one of the countries that didn’t ban Beauty and the Beast. Therefore, the researcher is interested in researching about how Beauty and the Beast potrays gay sexual orientation. The researcher is using Roland Barthes’ semiotics as a mean to interpret the data collected through observation and documentation of scenes that portrays gay man. The result of this is that gay men are tend to be portrayed as having feminine behavior, from the way they act or dressed, though it does not always seem to be the case. However, there is not much gay scene in this film, rather, it focused more on the story of Belle and the Beast.
