Teaching english vocabulary by using songs A case study of 4th grade Elementary School students in BSD

- Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects to learn for every English learner. There are several of teaching techniques to teach vocabulary such as using textbook and word-list. But these two techniques are considered to be a traditional way to learn vocabulary. Sometimes it makes the learners bored especially for young learners. So a new and fun teaching technique can be used to the learners, in this case by using songs. This study focuses on the process and results of how songs are used to teach vocabulary to young learners. The use of songs to teach vocabulary is considered can boost students’ motivation and may reduce their boredom in learning vocabulary. This study uses quantitative approach to get the data result. The data was collected by giving pretest, post-test, and questionnaire. Then the result was calculated by using descriptive analysis statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Testand Normalized Gain formula to answer the research question of this study. The data results show that using songs to teach vocabulary can be used to help students to master new vocabulary. The pre-test to post-test results show that there is a significant improvement in the students’ vocabulary achievement. The drawback of this teaching technique is it not effective in terms of time. It needs much time to teach vocabulary by this technique. It is effective though in terms of fun. This teaching technique is not really effective to be used in comprehensive teaching and studying process.Nevertheless, using songs to teach vocabulary can be used by teachers who want to make an excitingstudying activity in classroom to reduce students’ boredom
