- The focus of this study is to determine leading tourism destinations area of West Sumatra province which is accordance with the national tourism destination area. The study also analyzing the factors that influence the development of the leading tourism destination area of West Sumatra province which would increase the number of tourists visit to West Sumatra. Unit analysis of this study is the districts and the cities in West Sumatra province.The primary and secondary data collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD), field observations and interviews with relevant parties. The analysis of this study is using regional economic approach by applying Location Quotien (LQ) analytical equipment and Shift and Share models analysis, schalogram analysis, and geographic information system (GIS). The results showed that: 1). Zoning of West Sumatra tourism destination development consists of five provincial tourism destinations, nine provincial tourism strategic areas, and eight provincial potential destinations areas, 2). Factors affecting the development of the West Sumatra provincial tourism destination area are destination area, marketing, industry and institutional tourism management, 3). Development of tourism destination area can be obtained through the attractiveness, accessibility, and development of public and tourism facilities, community empowerment and investment expansion.
