Class Opening Activities by Senior and Junior English Teachers at SMAN in Curup in Academic Year 2006/2007

  • The objective of this research was to investigate teacher’s activities in opening English class at SMAN in Curup. The subjects of this research were 6 English teachers taken from SMAN 1 and SMAN 2 Curup. They were divided into two groups, senior and junior teachers. Senior teachers are the teachers who have been teaching more than 10 years, and junior teachers are the teachers who have been teaching less than 5 years and both of them have got S1 degree. The data of the research was taken by using classroom observation method and used observation list (checklist) as its instrument. The researcher observed in the classroom in three times observation for each sample. The results of the observation were analyzed by percentage formula. From the observation the researcher found that activities that applied by overall of English teachers both senior and junior in prior activities of opening class were greeting, checking classroom condition, checking student’s attendance and for making silence to solicit student’s attention. Class opening activities that frequently applied by senior and junior teachers were checking homework 6.4 %, discussing previous lesson 8 %, giving prior questions 8.2 %, giving examples 9.6 %, introducing lesson objectives 8.5 %, giving directions 9.6 %, telling outline of the lesson 8.5 %. It also found that there were some activities that applied by senior teachers but was not applied by junior teachers. The activities were giving games, listening and singing English songs, and giving wise words. Senior English teachers more variously on opening class activities compared junior teachers although in a low frequency.
