  • This research was aimed to investigate the difficulties in doing the reading section of TOEFL of fifth semester students of Universitas Bengkulu. The population of this research consisted of students of the fifth semester of English department of UNIB. 36 students were taken as sample. The data were collected by using the multiple choice reading section of TOEFL test that consisted of five types of questions, namely, ideas of the passage, directly answered questions, indirectly answered question, vocabulary, and overall review questions. The result of this research shows that indirectly answered questions were the most difficult type of questions faced by the students ( 61.10% of the subject answered these questions incorrectly). The second most difficult type of questions was vocabulary questions ( 44.44% of the subject answered these questions incorrectly}. In addition, 41.66% of the subject or 15 students answered incorrectly. This implies that the majority of the students found text in the TOEFL test difficult because they are not familiar with the topics. Overall, it is suggested that the students should be exposed to various reading texts with different topics.
