  • The enviroment under tree stands can be potentially used to produce variety of crops. Purpose of this research was to evaluate the performances of cardamon as intercropped under albizia stands. The study was performed in three steps, namely 1) observing the microenvironment under the stands at different ages, 2) determining the effects of shading to the growth of cardamon plants, and 3) determining the effects of albizia age, nitrogen and phophor dosages on the growth and yield of cardamon. The step 2 was conducted experimentally using Randomized complete block design with three replicates. The shading levels applied were 0, 35, and 70%. The step 3 was carried out as step 2 but the treatments consisted of albizia ages (3 and 6 yr), dosage of urea (0, 50, 100, 150 kg ha-1), and dosage of TSP (0, 100, and 200 kg ha-1) were arranged factorially. The results indicated that ages of stand affect the microenvironment underneath where 6 years old stands (70% shading) produce better environment for growth and yield of cardamon. The shading levels of 35 and 70% provided better environment for cardamon growth compared to no- shading. Effect of shading and nitrogen and phosphor on plant appeared 4 month after applications. Shading levels and age of albizia stand had independently affected the plant up to 6- 10 months. Combination of 70% shading or 6 yr albizia stands with 100 kg ha-1 had produced the highest growth and yield of cardamon. The yield of cardamon had linearly increased as the dosage of urea and TSP increased.
