- This research aims to find out the studying listening difficulties and the dominant difficulties faced by students of 4th semester English Department Universitas Bengkulu in academic year 2017/2018. The population of this research was fourth semester students of English Department of Universitas Bengkulu in academic year 2017/2018. The samples of this research were 78 students. This research used qualitative method as the methodology and the data were collected by using listening test, questionnaire, and interview as an instrument. The listening test consisted of 30 questions, while the questionnaire consisted of 30 items which was adapted from Hamouda (2013) about factor of listening difficulties. The interview consists of 2 questions. The significant factors that affect the listening to the text were the slang, idiom expression, unfamiliar word, and the long text. The students also encountered various listening problems which may be related to the content of the listening text such as: complex grammatical structures, or the psychological characteristics like the lack of interest. These problems could also be related to the listener or to the speaker such as when he faces difficulty to recognize the words which he knows because of the way they are pronounced, or the difficulty to understand a speech which is full of hesitation and pauses. The dominant category of listening difficulty that students encountered is listening material with the percentage of 80.51%.
