AN ANALYSIS OF LISTENING COMPREHENSION PROBLEMS FACED BY THE EIGHTH SEMESTER ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITAS BENGKULU IN LISTENING SECTION OF TOEFL TEST

  • This research aims to find out the listening comprehension problems faced by the 8th semester English Education Study Program students of Universitas Bengkulu in Listening Section of TOEFL test. The sample of this research is all eighth semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2017/2018 who have taken TOEFL test in Lab. Bahasa, FKIP, Universitas Bengkulu. The total sample is 65 students of 77 students. This research was using descriptive quantitative as the methodology and the data was collected by using questionnaire as an instrument that distributed via Google-form. The questionnaire consisted of 42 items which represent 7 aspects of listening comprehension problems by Hamouda (2013). This research uses simple statistical (percentage) to analyze the data. The result shows that the majority of the students have problems in listening comprehension in 7 aspects. The percentage average of each aspect from highest to lowest was the listening comprehension problems related to the content of listening text, related to the speaker, related to the listener, related to the linguistic features, caused by failure to concentrate, related to the physical setting and related to the psychological characteristics. The students often encounter various kinds of listening problems in TOEFL test such as related to pauses by the speaker, feeling fatigue of a long spoken text, lost focus because of poor quality of recorder, recognition due to pronunciation by the listener/student, reduced form in linguistic features, the student’ inabili t y in und e rstanding the tex t and un clear sound. F rom the re sult s, it can be concluded that students of the 8th semester at English Education Study Program still have listening comprehension difficulties or problems eventhoug they are the English Education students.
